Washington, D.C. (March 1, 2026) — In a moving acknowledgment of service and sacrifice, the D.C. National Guard hosted its inaugural Law Enforcement Recognition Ceremony on February 26, 2026, at the D.C. Armory. The event celebrated the efforts of federal and local law enforcement agencies as partners in the D.C. Safe and Beautiful mission aimed at ensuring the safety and well-being of the capital's residents.
Celebrating Heroes
The ceremony, hosted by Brig. Gen. Leland D. Blanchard II, Interim Commanding General of the District of Columbia National Guard, saw distinguished guests including U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi, Gady Serralta, the Director of the U.S. Marshals Service, and Jeffery Carroll, Interim Chief of Police for the Metropolitan Police Department. Together, they commended the bravery displayed by officers across ten different agencies who received accolades for their dedication and service.
Among the honorees were West Virginia National Guardsmen U.S. Army Sgt. Sarah Beckstrom and U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe, both recognized for their commendable actions during a recent incident. Additionally, the ceremony memorialized Metropolitan Police Officer Terry Bennett, who tragically lost his life in the line of duty.
“What we have here today is a profound reminder of the sacrifices made by our law enforcement officers,” stated Brig. Gen. Blanchard. “Their relentless commitment exemplifies the strength of character required to uphold the law in our community.”
A Collective Effort
Attendees included representatives from major agencies such as the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Federal Bureau of Investigation, U.S. Secret Service, and U.S. Park Police, among others. Each department involved in this collaborative effort was recognized through the awarding of the District of Columbia National Guard Commendation Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, or the Distinguished Service Medal.
Significant highlights from the ceremony included an example of quick response by 26 members of the U.S. Secret Service, who provided vital life-saving care following an attack on the two West Virginia National Guard service members in late November 2025. Several officers were awarded the Meritorious Service Medal, while others received Commendation Medals for securing the area and managing communications during the emergency.

The overarching mission of the D.C. Safe and Beautiful initiative is to foster an environment where residents can feel safe and secure in their community. Brig. Gen. Blanchard emphasized that such collaborations across law enforcement agencies are integral to achieving this goal, stating, “It is vital that we ensure our citizens can live without fear and trust in the brave individuals who protect us every day.”
